Pre-Raphaelite Photos

Here are a few photos from my pre-Raphaelite themed photo shoot. I used quite dim lighting as a lot of the pre-Raphaelite photos that I have researched are painted in this way, in order to represent the natural, nature based environment of the images. Pre-Raphaerlites loved to work with nature, as they aimed to present the natural beauty of the world, as done before the new art movement following Raphael.

  1. First of all, let me say it's refreshing to see someone else appreciate Pre-Raphaelite art (and photography), which has been something of a passion of mine now for, oh, 20 years ... :)

First of all, if you feel inspired to delve into the photographic side further, look up Julia Margaret Cameron, a highly individual (and determined) woman who, aside from her famous portraits of people such as Tennyson and Charles Darwin, earned herself the epithet of "the world's first art photographer", courtesy of her constructing elaborate dioramas depicting, for example, scenes from Arthurian legend (a favourite Pre-Raphaelite topic) and photographing them in an ethereal, dreamy manner (not easy with 19th century equipment!). You might find her very interesting to study.

Second, with respect to your own photos, how did you manage to capture the candlelit image? Only I've tried in the past to capture images in candlelight, using both 35 mm film and digital cameras, and the attempts have all been abject failures. Since you have manifestly succeeded where I failed, please tell me how you did it!
